Hafiz was a 14th-century Persian poet whose writings became some of the most beloved and widely memorized verses in the Persian-speaking world. Born in Shiraz, in present-day Iran, he is best known for his lyrical poetry exploring love, longing, divine union, beauty, wine, music, and the contradictions of spiritual life.
His poetry often moves fluidly between earthly and mystical imagery, making it difficult to tell where romantic devotion ends and spiritual devotion begins. Hafiz frequently challenged religious hypocrisy and rigid moralism, favoring direct experience, joy, sincerity, and the intoxication of love.
Much of his work was collected in the Divan of Hafiz, a poetry collection that remains deeply influential across Persian literature and Sufi tradition. In many households, the book is traditionally opened at random for guidance or reflection, a practice known as fal-e Hafez. Over the centuries, Hafiz has inspired readers and writers around the world, including figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
