Joseph

Recognising Purity

Biography:

Joseph is a central figure in the Book of Genesis and one of the great dreamers and interpreters of the Old Testament. He was the son of Jacob and Rachel, and is remembered for his journey from favored son to slave, prisoner, and eventually a powerful ruler in Egypt.

According to the biblical story, Joseph was deeply loved by his father, who gave him a richly ornamented coat that became a symbol of both affection and jealousy. Joseph also experienced vivid prophetic dreams suggesting that one day his family would bow before him. These dreams angered his brothers, who eventually sold him into slavery and told their father he had died.

Taken to Egypt, Joseph passed through a series of hardships, including false accusation and imprisonment. While in prison, he became known for his ability to interpret dreams, a gift that eventually brought him before Pharaoh. After correctly interpreting dreams that foretold years of abundance followed by famine, Joseph was elevated to a position of immense authority, overseeing the preparation and distribution of grain throughout Egypt.

Years later, famine drove Joseph’s brothers to Egypt seeking food, leading to one of the most famous scenes of recognition and reconciliation in the Bible. Rather than taking revenge, Joseph forgave his brothers, seeing a larger divine purpose unfolding through his suffering and exile.

Joseph’s story became one of the defining biblical narratives of betrayal, providence, forgiveness, and transformation. Across Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions, he is remembered as a figure of wisdom, patience, integrity, and trust in the mysterious unfolding of destiny.

Inner Meaning:

Joseph reminds us that there is a purity in us that can’t be tarnished or removed by any external circumstance—and that every circumstance is only a passing season.

Joseph reminds us also of the tremendous healing power of forgiveness. How deeply can we apply this forgiveness in our lives? Can we forgive others of the ways they have hurt us, and ask to be forgiven? Can we forgive ourselves, and release ourselves from the burden of past hurts?

Joseph shows a tremendous purity of heart. Whatever situation he finds himself in, he doesn’t fall into despair or bitterness. He keeps finding ways to serve. He keeps expressing his own truthful nature. At first, it doesn’t seem to help his situation—things actually get worse! But in the end, the Lord raises him up to the place where his light and gifts can be seen and appreciated by all, even the very ones who betrayed him.

Joseph is a light for those who have fallen into hard times, and a reminder for those who are enjoying the currents of success! It’s what’s inside that counts, which will ultimately shape our destiny—for better or worse.
