Hanuman
Biography:
Hanuman is one of the most beloved figures in Hindu tradition, revered as a symbol of devotion, courage, strength, and selfless service. He appears most prominently in the Ramayana, where he serves as the loyal companion and devotee of Rama.
Hanuman is traditionally described as a vanara — a divine monkey being — possessing extraordinary abilities including immense strength, flight, shapeshifting, and mastery over the senses. Yet despite his great power, he is remembered above all for his humility and unwavering devotion to Ram and Sita.
During Sita’s captivity in Lanka, Hanuman leaps across the ocean in search of her, discovers her in Ravana’s kingdom, and delivers Ram’s message of hope. In later episodes of the epic, he burns parts of Lanka with his flaming tail, carries an entire mountain to obtain a healing herb for Lakshmana, and repeatedly places himself in danger for the sake of others.
Hanuman became one of the great embodiments of bhakti — the path of loving devotion in Hindu spirituality. Stories and devotional poetry often portray him as completely free of pride or self-interest, using all his strength solely in service to the divine. One famous image depicts Hanuman tearing open his chest to reveal Ram and Sita living within his heart.
Across India and much of Southeast Asia, Hanuman is honored through temples, chanting, martial traditions, festivals, and devotional practice. He remains a symbol of fearless devotion, disciplined energy, loyalty, and the idea that true strength arises through humility and love.
Inner Meaning:
Hanuman is the great champion of selfless service. He reminds us that actions done solely for the upliftment and wellbeing of others are their own reward, and they unlock the hidden gifts of our deepest Self.
For all his great strength and powers, Hanuman has a soft heart which melts in the presence of devotion and acts of kindness.
Hanuman can also be a great trickster, especially where forces of darkness are concerned. Like Spirit itself, he can’t be pinned down into a fixed shape. He comes to frustrate the forces of darkness, and to serve the devotees of Truth.
The appearance of Hanuman is an auspicious sign—trust that he has your back! With such a support, anything is possible…
