Mirabai

Devote Yourself

Biography:

Mirabai — also known as Meera Bai — was a 16th-century Hindu mystic, poet, and saint whose devotional songs to Krishna became some of the most beloved expressions of bhakti spirituality in India. Born into a royal Rajput family in Rajasthan, Mirabai is remembered for her intense and uncompromising love for Krishna, whom she regarded not merely as a deity, but as her true beloved and eternal companion.

According to tradition, Mirabai’s devotion began in childhood after receiving a small image of Krishna and becoming deeply absorbed in worship and song. Though later married into a royal household, she increasingly withdrew from courtly expectations and devoted herself to singing, prayer, and the company of saints and devotees. Her refusal to conform to social and royal norms created tension within her family and led to many legends about attempts to silence or harm her, which she is said to have survived through divine grace.

Mirabai’s poetry expresses longing, ecstasy, surrender, heartbreak, and union with the divine in deeply personal language. In many of her songs, Krishna appears not as an abstract god, but as an intimate presence addressed with tenderness, passion, grief, and joy. Her verses were composed in vernacular languages rather than Sanskrit, helping them spread widely among ordinary people across India.

Over centuries, Mirabai became one of the most celebrated poet-saints of the Bhakti movement. Her songs continue to be sung in temples, homes, and devotional gatherings throughout India, and she remains a symbol of fearless devotion, spiritual freedom, and love that transcends social convention and worldly authority.

Inner Meaning:

If we are seeing Mirabai, it must be because we are on some level wondering: what happens when the moth surrenders itself to the flame—when a human heart is set ablaze in its longing for the Divine?

Mirabai doesn’t leave us instructions or teachings, but rather, like a rare and precious flower coming into full bloom, her exquisite fragrance of devotion reaches our hearts and encourages us to be fearless and whole-hearted in our desire for Union.

Come, my love, drop your burdens in this river of divine longing—let it carry you to the boundless ocean of the true Self.
